About this evaluation
Diagnostic clarification for obsessive-compulsive concerns
Making sense of repetitive thoughts and routines
Most people double-check a locked door now and then. For some, unwanted thoughts, urges, or routines take up a great deal of time, feel hard to set aside, or get in the way of school, work, or relationships. These experiences can look similar to generalized anxiety, attention difficulties, perfectionism, or the preference for sameness sometimes seen in autism. Sorting out which explanation fits, or whether several are involved, matters for planning care.
At BonPsy, obsessive-compulsive concerns are addressed as diagnostic clarification within a comprehensive evaluation, looking at the whole person rather than one symptom list.
What the evaluation looks at
The evaluation looks at the content and function of repetitive thoughts and behaviors: what they are, how much time they take, what they are meant to prevent or relieve, and how they affect daily life. Structured interview and questionnaire measures help describe these patterns consistently.
Because the same behavior can have different roots, testing may also look at attention, working memory, and executive functioning (for example, whether re-checking relates to doubt or to losing track), along with anxiety, mood, and, when relevant, social communication. This differential approach helps clarify questions such as OCD vs. anxiety vs. ADHD, and informs which treatment approaches the person and their providers may want to consider.
Who it helps
This evaluation may help when a therapist would like diagnostic clarification to guide treatment, when a family is trying to understand rituals or worries that seem to be growing, or when an adult wants to understand a long-standing pattern. Age eligibility for your situation is confirmed with the practice.
How results guide treatment
Testing is the foundation of good treatment. The report describes what the evaluation helps clarify, including strengths, and offers recommendations to discuss with a therapist or physician. Clarifying the picture can inform which therapy approaches are worth exploring and how school or work supports might help. BonPsy provides evaluations only. We do not prescribe medication or provide ongoing therapy. With your written permission, results are shared with your treating providers.
