About this evaluation

Diagnostic clarification for mood questions

When the question is about mood

Shifts in energy, sleep, focus, and mood can be hard to sort out from the inside, and from the outside. Periods of low mood, stretches of unusual energy or restlessness, racing thoughts, or difficulty concentrating can overlap with several conditions. People and their treating providers sometimes find that the same pattern has been described in different ways over the years. A careful evaluation can help bring those threads together.

At BonPsy, questions about bipolar disorder are addressed as diagnostic clarification within a comprehensive evaluation. The aim is to look at mood alongside attention, anxiety, and other factors, rather than in isolation.

What the evaluation looks at

A bipolar disorder evaluation centers on history and pattern. Your clinician gathers a detailed history of mood, energy, and sleep over time, including whether changes tend to occur in distinct periods or are more constant. Standardized questionnaires and interview measures help organize that history. With permission, information from a family member or treating provider may add perspective.

Because attention, impulsivity, and restlessness can appear in both mood conditions and ADHD, the evaluation may also include testing of attention, working memory, processing speed, and executive functioning, along with measures of anxiety and other emotional concerns. Looking across these areas helps clarify which explanations best fit the overall picture, for example ADHD vs. a mood condition vs. anxiety, or more than one at the same time.

Who it helps

This evaluation may be useful when a therapist, physician, or psychiatrist would like a clearer diagnostic picture before adjusting a treatment plan, when earlier explanations have not seemed to fit, or when someone wants to understand how mood and attention interact in daily life. Age eligibility for a mood-focused question is confirmed with the practice.

How results guide treatment

Testing is the foundation of good treatment. The written report summarizes what the evaluation helps clarify, notes any remaining uncertainty, and offers recommendations the person and their providers can use in treatment planning. BonPsy provides evaluations only. We do not prescribe medication or provide ongoing therapy. With your written permission, results are shared with your treating providers. Decisions about medication and ongoing therapy stay with the treating providers, who can use the report as one source of information.

If ongoing care is not yet in place, the report includes suggestions for the kinds of providers who may be helpful.

In-person testing takes place at 27281 Las Ramblas, Suite 200, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Clinical intake and feedback are by secure telehealth for clients physically located in California at the time of each session.

Will my psychiatrist or therapist receive the results?

With your written permission, BonPsy shares results with your treating providers so the findings can inform the care you already receive.
